What Causes Chocking Sensation,cough And Congestion During Sleep?
Hi I would like to know why for the past three months or so I ve been waking up in the middle of my sleep coughing and choking hysterically, my eyes watered and I can t swallow because mucus is blocking in my throat and I cant breathe either , I m catching for air and spitting ....its scary.I have to sleep upright and even then as soon as I drift off to sleep it happens again

Your symptoms are indicative of postnasal drip due to excess mucous build up at the back of the throat. Postnasal symptoms trigger symptoms like cough, hoarseness, choking sensation, allergies, infection, GERD, etc. Postnasal drip occurs due to allergy, DNS, sinusitis, spicy food, age, dryness in the air, GERD.
Use a humidifier in the room to keep air moist. Avoid taking spicy food, avoid exposure to pollutants and bright light. Get clinically examined by an ENT, take antihistamines to suppress symptoms of allergy. Antibiotics, decongestants and steroids are also effective. Nasal saline irrigation also works well. If DNS is detected, it is treated with septoplasty. Lose excess weight. Cut on caffeine, alcohol. Keep your house dust free.
