What Causes Chills And Excessive Thirst?

My father is 85 years old. Today he came in from being outside complaining of feeling cold and began shivering badly. He finally warmed up but feels very weak. He is very thirsty and is drinking a lot of water. He has been sleeping most of the afternoon. I just found out that he had frequent urination last night, about every two hours. He is diabetic but his sugar checked fine. Blood pressure and pulse was normal.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

What you are describing seems like your father is having fever. Consider confirming it and then give an antipyretic medicine if the fever is high.
He may be having a urinary tract infection, which is very important to be treated with antibiotic as soon as possible. So I suggest that you go to your local doctor, consider doing an urinalyses and urine culture. Once UTI is confirmed, antibiotics should be started as soon as possible.
Drinking plenty of fluids is very important.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards,
Dr. Papaqako
