What Causes Child To Come Down In Growth Chart?

My 3 year old son has recently fallen off the growth charts for height (he's always been on the bottom end of the charts, but now has just fallen off). My doctor got blood tests; everything was WNL, but the BUN & CO2 levels were elevated. They are referring us to a nephrologist. He is an otherwise healthy child. Any ideas as what could be going on?

The recent onset of growth failure in a child of your son's age could be related to problems with any of the several systems of the body; perhaps the history of your child's growth and a physical examination made your doctor consider kidney problems. The BUN and CO2 elevation has therefore led to some validation of his suspicions. Hence the referal to the nephrologist. The possible diagnosis might be renal tubular acidosis (where the child keeps losing bicarbonate in the urine and his blood and body turn acidic), chronic renal failure (where the kidney functions are suboptimal from a long time) or something else.
