What Causes Chest Pain Radiating To The Back Along With Nausea?

I have several symptoms but the most bothersome is the pain on the upper left handside right on the rib cage; it goes sometimes to the back. I feel nausea, like my stomach is running around in circles; I ve had a bad cough for over two years and the lung specialist I went to see said it had fibrosis ... lesions on my left lung. I have dry mouth and my tongue seems to be burning as if I have thrush. I don t feel like eating; have lost weight and the only thing that calms my symptoms a little is water with electrolites. Anything that is sweet makes the mouth and nausea worst.

Hello,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and am sorry for the health situation you are going through.

1. The presence of fibrosis lesions in your lungs is indicative for a past pulmonary disease like infections (pneumonia, etc.), sarcoidosis, etc. Further diagnostic tests like blood count, sputum culture, etc. would determine the main cause leading to fibrosis.

2. Bad coughing if no real sputum could be due to possible acid reflux or recurrent lung infections or other pathologies. Upper endoscopy advised to rule out acid reflux/gastritis or any other gastric problems.

3. Feeling of nausea associated with pain on upper left handside right on the rib cage should be taken as a signal for stomach/bowel pathologies (like hyperacidity disease of the stomach for example). Upper endoscopy and abdominal ultrasound will rule it out together with checking the gallbladder pathways.

4. The presence of burning mouth if you have a rush, could be a sign of thrush itself. It can be easily diagnosed by oral swab, blood count, imaging testing, salivary flow testing.

Another possible cause could be due to acid reflux or other hyperacidity disease of the stomach.

Further evaluation of blood electrolytes and vitamins is needed to rule out possible deficiencies like vit.B deficiency for example and treat them adequately.

5. The only painful area of your lungs is the pleura which is rich in nerves. When the fibrosis process reaches pleura it irritates its nerves and causes pain. This nerves radiate this pain to the back as well.

6. The loss in weight you are experiencing ca be because of the primary cause of lung fibrosis (e.g. TB to consider and ruled out by PPD tuberculin test).

Loss of appetite, and GI disorders you're experiencing can also cause to lose weight. Once they are correctly diagnosed and treated, you'll gain the normal weight too.

Discuss this further with your doctor and let me know.
