What Causes Chest And Rib Pain While Breathing Caused After Injury?

I am 58 yrs old, still smoking, 40+ yrs. I have fallen twice recently. Once falling back to my back on carpeted home stairs. Then recently outside on sidewalk, falling chest first onto my ribcage. My large breasts saved my ribs. But ribs still hurt, both front and back on left rib cage. Hard to breathe in deeply, sit up from a laying position in bed. I roll out onto my hands on the floor. The most bothersome symptom I have had recently is,Mod to S Severe itching on my back, no dry skin, nor lesions....Showers nor lotions help. Is itching a symptom of early stages of Lung Cancer? also have a lot of Acid Reflux, like something is there in Esophagus. Thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of getting an injury after a fall, now you are experiencing chest pain and difficulty in breathing. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get X-ray chest, CT and MRI done to detect any bone fracture, trauma, muscle strain, pneumothorax, costochondritis, internal injury /blunt trauma, etc. You will be treated accordingly, if needed your treating doctor may refer you to an orthopedics. Conservative treatment combined with physical therapy is helpful if there is no fracture.

You can take Antacids, PPIs to get rid of acid reflux. Take food in time, take food that is rich in fiber, avoid constipation. Take plenty of water. You can take laxatives at bed time. To ease pain, take Combiflam or Naproxen, one SOS when needed. Avoid addictions if any. You can apply hydrocortisone ointment for severe itching in the back. Take regular bath, wear cotton clothes. Do not share toiletries.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
