What Causes Change In Stool Consistency?

Hello Dr. Rynne, for the past two days or so, my 13 month old girl has been pooping normally but the consistency has gone from toothpaste softness to more like play dough toughness and dryness. I wouldn t qualify it as hard pebbles, but really like play dough. Is this normal? Thanks! Auditi

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I am sorry before that I have to answer this question. If you want to ask Dr. Rynne you can directly push "ask me" button in his/her profile.

About your daughter having hard stool consistency, I suspect that your daughter experiencing constipation that may have caused by some of the followings:
1. Lack of fiber in her daily diet
2. Consumption of milk too much
3. Dysfunction of bowel movement

Take your child to see a pediatrician for an examination such as stool and blood to determine the underlying cause of the complaint.

Some ways to prevent the occurrence of these conditions are:
1. Give enough fluids through water or milk
2. Do not put too much milk when making milk for your baby
3. Ask your doctor for a good diet option for your baby

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nurul Falah
