What Causes Cervical Ectropion Despite Having Pap Smear?

Hello,I had a pap smear 3 years ago, it came back inconclusive, saying i should treat infection, i also had a cervical ectoprion at that time.I repeated the pap smear after treating the infection with antibiotics, and the test came back normal, but i still had the cervical ectoprion. Now, i have scheduled for a pap smear test tomorrow, just a routine test which i know is overdue, but what prompted me to have it done now was because i normally spot during ovulation.so my questions are;it seems i permanently have a cervical ectoprion, is this normal?Should i be worried about my ovulation spotting?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Ectropion can be due to the regular use of oral contraception or due to vaginal births. So, very likely you will have it as long as you use contraception, or if you had vaginal deliveries you will have ectropion all your life.

Ectropion is not dangerous, but it may be confused with premalignant changes in the cervix. You will need to regularly have pap smears as it is recommended to have them for routine screening of cervical cancer.

I hope this is helpful. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
