Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My right ankle just gave way last Monday. I went to A&E who sent me home saying it was cartilage damage and to rest it for a few days. One week on, the pain is still excruciating , but the swelling has reduced a great deal - it is now mainly centred around both sides of my ankle (before these areas were huge as was my entire foot. I have a constant dull ache-like pain across the left half of the top of my foot and some tenderness (not pain) if gently pressed. My ankle on the other hand suffers unbearable pain if touched. The topside of my foot also seems to have constant pins-and-needles type sensation which at turns intensifies to feel like a burning sensation. Finally, the constant dull ache-like pain also runs up my leg towards my knee but I m guessing that is a result of my calf muscle being tight and/or because of the tippy-toe manner in which I have to walk/step with that foot as that is the only bearable manner in which I can. I am worried that it may be more than just a bad ankle sprain . Do my described symptoms suggest this to you?
The severe pain with difficulties in the movement at ankle joint suggest high level of sprain or strain with underlying nerve compression from ligament as there is burning and pins needles sensation as well.
Primary care guidance: - Local application of ice - Analgesic spray or ointment - Anti-inflammatory medications - Avoidance of weight bearing or tight shoes - Foot elevation over 2-3 pillows when resting.
Discuss the need of an x-ray or MRI with your doc for further guidelines.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
