Mostly your husband is having Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, the nerve
involvement due to Diabetes.
Try to control Diabetes in a better manner especially HbA1c long term
control indicator of Diabetes must be below 7.5.
His lipid profile (all cholesterols) must be well within normal range
with diet exercise and drugs like statins.
Smoking can exaggerate neuropathic symptoms.
For immediate relief Pregabalin tablets 30 to 60 mg/day at bed time
will work.
Vitamin supplements like methylcobalamine ,Benfotiamine,Alpha Lipoic Acid (available in one cap) can be of help.
