What Causes Burning Sensation On Face After Applying Retinol Cream?

I used a retinol cream, ROC, and my face started to burn about the third time I used it. Then it got blotchy and seemed to dry completely out. I have twice as many wrinkles now and before I used it. I cant even use a mosturizer now without breaking out in red bumps!

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

The topical cream that you have been using contains a topical retinoid and you have develop irritation to this topical application, also known as Retinoid dermatitis.
Topical retinoids are inherently irritant. The irritation potential varies between different classes of topical retinoids e.g while tretinoin is more irritanting, retinaldehyde and retinol are less irritating.
Nevertheless, topical retinoids should ideally be started cautiously and application should be either every alternate night Or applied for just 2 hours every night, initially. This gives time for the skin to adjust to retinoids.
Now, that you have develped irritant dermatitis, you should discontinue this cream for the time being.
I suggest you to apply a moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate 0.05% cream, twice daily for 3-5 days. That should take care of the dermatitis.
Topical steroids are prescription drugs and I suggest you to talk to your doctor for the needful.
Once the redness and peeling subsides with topical steroids, you may restart with this cream either as alternate night application Or using it just for 2 hours at night.
While you are using a topical retinoid you must also use a sunscreen because topical retinoids make skin sensitive to sun exposure.
