What Causes Burning Sensation In The Throat While Having Acidity?

My wife has acidity problems due to which she does not get sound sleep and also has burning sensation in her throat. Our Physician is of the opinion that this not due to reflux, which in sitting position is very much unlikely. Physician gives antacid dosage for 10-15 days, which gives temporary relief for a month. But problem occurs again. What could be the problem and cure?? Please advice.

Hi. If the symptoms are getting temporarily relieved due to antacids, then let me advice you to treat it as a reflux.
If you were my patient, I would have prescribed a proton pump inhibitor like pantoprazole 40 mg once daily for 5-10 days. I would also advice lifestyle modifications like avoiding spicy foods, physical exercise and a reasonable diet. Also avoid sleeping on the right side as it will cause increased reflux.
If it is not controlled by all the above measures, then i would add domperidone to pantoprazole which is available as a single tablet.
If reflux does not decrease by all the above measures, then i would suggest a detailed workout by a gastroenterologist. Hope this helps. Thanks.
