Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Within the last 4 months I have suddenly begun having bruising on my arms. It s obvious when I bump them that is the cause. But others just appear without bumping or scraping. They start the size of a pencil eraser and then just spread to about the size of a half dollar. I realize my age (82) causes thinning of my skin which contributes to this problem. My prescriptions also contribute to this (Chlopidegrel, Tamsulosin, and Pravastatin). But I have been taking them for years without a problem and suddenly I have this happening. Are there other causes for this?
You might have a reduced amount of platelets or an abnormality in the clotting proteins. This can result from spleen or liver problems, or other causes. If you have recently been taking a lot of aspirin or drugs like ibuprofen for any reason, this could also cause the problem, particularly because of interactions with your current medicines. This is a problem that should be evaluated promptly by your physician. Blood tests can tell if the platelets are low or if clotting factors are abnormal. The exam and other blood tests may identify other problems. Hope this helps.
