What Causes Brown Colour Phlegm White Coughing?

I currently have a sore throat and what feels like chest congestion . I have been taking mucinex and it only helps for a short while. I have also been coughing up phlegm in the mornings that has a dark brown color to it. It hurts to swallow as well. Could it be allergies or possibly a cold

Welcome to health care magic.

You have got bacterial infection of throat or acute pharyngitis.

If I were our treating doctor,I would recommend,
-Antibiotic course of tab augmentin thrice a day for 7-10 days to cure the infection.
(prescription drug)
-Tab like acetaminophen analgesic twice a day for 3 days and Salt water gargles for throat pain relief.
Cough expectorant 2 tsps twice a day for 3 days
-Steam inhalation for chest congestion.
-Avoid eating fried,spicy food and chilled drinks.Avoid exposure to cold environment.

If cough persists beyond 2 weeks,certain investigations like sputum examination and chest Xray need to be done.
