What Causes Breathlessness Upon Mild Exertion In A Diabetic Patient?

I m taking 150mgd Atenolol, Adalat LA 30 x3 daily., plus other meds for Diabetes Type 2 Insulin etc. I have breathless episodes with only mild exertion, or, when I sleep, sitting vertical, or pillow at 45 deg. My heart rate is slow, a bit irregular, and when I sleep gets even slower, I use Pradaxa 150mg. Also have fluid retention mainly in legs and feet, compression stockings, Farrow wraps don t stop the leaks. This plus a whole theme park of common and not so common side effects! My main concern is resolving the slow heart rate and breathlessness so I can move faster than a sloth!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello. Breathlessness on exertion is a sign of heart failure - I.e. the heart is failing to pump as much blood as it should during each heart beat. It has been there for a while as suggested by your other symptoms like swelling of the feet and inability to sleep in a horizontal position. You need to get your cardiac status assessed and your medications reviewed with a cardiologist. Being a diabetic, it becomes all the more important. Hope this helps.
