What Causes Breathing Difficulty And Dry Cough?

My husband is 60 years old. Excercises daily and maybe 30 pounds overweight. Has labored breathing with just small tasks. Takes no medication. Has had stress test and lung X-ray a year ago with negative results. Seems to become worse now with dry cough involved. Father died of lung cancer at 57 but was a smoker. My husband is not a smoker. We are both concerned as condition seems worse than a year ago. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The dry cough your husband is having, taking into account what you are prescribing, could be due to possible stomach hyperacidity problems. I would recommend to run a few diagnostic tests to determine the right diagnosis including:

-complete blood count
-upper endoscopy
-another stress tes and chest X-ray

Then we can discuss for the best treatment strategy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
