Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Breathing Difficulty After A Knee Surgery?
My sister had. Knee surgery and was in rehab. She was there three days and started experiencing trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, loss of speech. The symptoms get worse, then subside and return. She was in the hospital and nothing could be found. They released her back to the rehab center. The symptoms are still there.
Follwing knee surgery DVT can occur causing pulmonary thrombo-embolism and consequent breathing difficulty. Swallowing difficulty and loss of speech can be explained by transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) which can occur in the postoperative period due to low-flow TIAs as on prolonged bed rest (when the circulation is least active).
However, symptoms remitting and returning and presumably all investigations are normal (nothing could be found) are unusual. Allergy or sensitivity to metal implants in the knee, if any can be another angle.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
