What Causes Body Spasms And Numbness Despite Having C-spine Epidural For Neck Pain?

I had a c-spine epidural 5 yrs ago for chronic neck pain. During the procedure, my whole body spasmed and the right side of my body went numb. The anesthesiologist said it was transient and feeling will return. I have regained feeling in my right side down to about my knee down which is still pins and needles and burns at times. It is painful all of the time. Any ideas? Thanks, Dave allen.

Hello,

You suffered numbness after C-spine epidural 5 years back and had right side of your body numbed. Presently, you are experiencing pins and needles on the right side. Pins and needles are commonly caused due to nerve damage, developing peripheral neuropathy, could be due to impingement of spinal nerves (radiculopathy). Your symptoms may be indicative of MS, a disorder of the nerve sheath that causes pins and needles.

Pins and needles in part of a buttock, leg or foot can be a sign of pressure on a nerve. It may be caused by a prolapsed disc or slipped disc. Get clinically examined by a neurologist, if you are suffering from autoimmune diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, it can cause you symptoms of neuropathy and hence pins and needles. Diabetes and alcohol misuse can cause neuropathy.

Avoid taking alcohol and control your blood glucose level at all cost. Imbalances or deficiencies in certain minerals and vitamins such as vitamin B6, B12 can cause pins and needles. Take food rich in vitamin B6, B12 or supplements. Get all required nerve function tests, nerve conduction velocity test, imaging tests done. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
