What Causes Body Soreness And Intense Headache?

Hello, My son is a healthy and active 18yr old. No drug/alcohol/smoking ever. He recently used a sauna at his fitness club after his workout. I believe he was in the sauna 3times this past week. On this past Thursday, he developed body soreness and a headache. No chest/nasal congestion. No cough. This morning his temp was 100.8. The headache is intense, but he feels relief when he s lying down. He has taken 2inbuprophen. Could he be dehydrated?

Hello,

Yes, your guess is right, your son is having headache because of severe dehydration and electrolytes loss after sauna. Please don’t worry as it is completely correctible. The following are the instructions that I would give to patients who come to my clinic with similar complaints:
1) Let him take ample rest by lying down
2) Allow plenty of fluids
3) ORS sachet in 1 lit of water is to be dissolved and asked to drink frequently
4) Rehydration and replenishment of electrolytes is the key.
5) Caffeine helps reduce headache
6) For severe headache, analgesics like tab. Ibuprofen can be taken

It would come down by 3-4 days usually. If no improvement is seen or situation worsens, contact your GP.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
