What Causes Blood Is Stool?

I had a burritto w/ chorizo and lots of veggies in it this past weekend. Within 2 hours I had alot of gas,some cramping and then I had loose bowels. Movement was soft,loose,and feathery..pretty much the usual medium brown color. I noticed some mucus, too. This went on for several hours. I slept thru the night and when I awoke..again I had gas and a bit of loose stool. Still had urge to go..and would pass a bit w/ mucous. After may trips..I noticed some mucous mixed with blood. This went on for a few more hours. I resorted to a bland soft diet till my system gets better. Marked improvement. Still have some gas off and on..but mucous seems to have disappeared and also any trace of blood. This morning...I had a soft bowel movement. Yesterday I had reintroduced a bit of more solid food..2 slices of whole wheat bread w/ deli turkey,green beans, scrambled eggs, a cup of Greek non fat plain yogurt, some broth and thin bean curd noodles and lots and lots of water. With this soft bowel movement...looked to be loose again and a tiny bit of mucous tinged with string of blood. Am I dead? I'm not being funny..but I'm trying to not freak out. I know my hemmoroids must be flared. I've never experienced blood before in or with my stool. The blood is very bright red..and as I said..just a bit appears.

In most cases, causes of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. It is very important to take lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary
