What Causes Blood In Vomit?

A friend suffers from chronic Hep C (diagnosed 20 years ago) and cirrhosis of the liver (diagnosed 2 years ago) and stupidly has relapsed with alcohol for the last 2 months. Last night was a binge. Today the person can t stop vomiting (some blood), has a swollen abdomen (looking pregnant) and has a gray skin tone. I am obviously concerned...Should I force this person to go to the ER?

Hi thanks for contacting HCM....

I am glad to see for caring your friend for his medical condition...

Let me know you your friend having cirrhosis (last stage fibrotic liver disease)
Of liver....

Abdominal enlargement is by ascites which can be present in cirrhosis by portal hypertension....
So for this following treatment needed.....
1.Low salt diet
2.Diuretic therapy
3.beta blocker to reduce pressure

Now focus on second complaint which is hemetemesis so let me know you dear it is by variceal bleeding for which band ligation or sclerosent injection needed .....

So yes consult gastroenterologist or ER for surgical management of variceal bleed.

If condition severe TIPSS like procedure done ...

Take care
