What Causes Blood In Urine Despite Having Negative UTI Results?

I have experienced long term UTI however the most recent lab tests reveal no bacteria in urine. I was given CIPRO and Bactrim to address bacteria infection but after todays lab results (no bacteria) I was advised to discontinue that line of treatment. I am taking another medication for the Prostate to address flow issues. I am slated for a bladder exam (scope) in the near future. I am a bit confused with the latest urine results, blood but no bacteria, and am interested in learning what other causes might be responsible for the current diagnosis. What other causes are there to account for blood in the urine.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

Yes,blood in urine can also be seen without urinary tract infection but it is quite uncommon.

Blood in urine (haematuria) could occur normally when you took food like beets or blackberry, drugs like rifampin or pyrazinamide etc and it subsides automatically after the withdrawal of that.

even, heavy physical exercises or heavy work load or exertion could also cause temporary reddish urine or blood in urine,so it is not always abnormal as per out thinking.

If It has come once or twice without any reason or symptoms then there is no need of any investigation further and it get subsides by itself.

If it will come continuously then it can be due to stones
(kidney or bladder),prostate enlargement, acute urethral injury, kidney cyst or rarely tumor in kidney, ureter, bladder etc which should be found by various investigations.

Do you have any symptoms since this haematuria?

Treatment is mainly depend upon the underlying cause or diagnosis for which you have to undergo routine blood and urine investigations with ultrasound of abdomen or cystoscopy to rule out bladder stone/tumor/growth.

You must consult urologist and get it diagnosed if blood continue to come in urine.

Thanks and regards,
Dr.sandipkabra.
