My 14 year old son has played soccer for about 8 years. He is about 5 feet tall and weighs 100 lbs. Occasionally he has blood in his urine that looks like mahogany stain. A dark, heavy color. I have him pee in a typical plastic water bottle and when held up to the sunlight I can't see through it to my fingers on the other side.
It will last 3 to 10 days then return to normal for a while. His blood tests so far show no elevated white blood counts and everything comes back normal so far. He has no pain but after a few days of it he gets a little lethargic. Any ideas?
Hi, thank you for your question. First, I'm glad you've got a son who is good at soccer. Now, the problem is that his urine colour occasionally turns mahogany with no other significant problems apart from lethergy. Is those episodes associated with any sort of food he takes? Is there any other blood tests done apart from WBC count? The urine colour you mentioned can be due to the presence of Haemoglobin in urine, resultimg from rupture of red blood cells. There are many causes of red blood cells rupture, such as G6PD deficiency PNH, Sickle cell anaemia, HUS, and may even be due to strenuous exercise. Detailed history from his birth throughout the life-time and precipitating factors are also important. I'd like to request you to give such detailed information so that I can give better advice. Thank you. Have a nice day.
