What Causes Blood In The Saliva While On Antibiotics For Swollen Tonsils?

I just started antibiotics today for a swollen tonsil and earache. Just recently it seems a periotonsillar abscess ruptured where my bottom wisdom tooth would be. I spit out all the puss and blood and garbled with peroxide and listerine. It stopped letting out fluid for a while and then started to bleed a little again so I spit it all out and did the same gargling. I am very paranoid so I am wondering about the odds of developing pneumonia or lung infection. Should I just monitor myself or definitely go see a doctor in the morning?

Hi,

As per your complain pus and blood discharge from the area from where there should be wisdom tooth seems to be related to wisdom tooth and not Peritonsillar abscess. It can be due to inflamed gum flap over the wisdom tooth known as Pericoronitis. It occurs if food gets lodged between wisdom tooth and the gum flap covering the wisdom tooth.

And by food it does not mean that you see big food particles stuffed in there but it also means uncleaned area and bacterial growth below gum flap. It leads to inflammation of the flap leading to pain swelling and pus and blood discharge. As far as developing pneumonia or lung infection is concerned, it does not seems to occur by it as when it is swallowed it goes to stomach, however can cause stomach infection.

You should consult an oral surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like x ray can help in diagnosis. You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkillers along with warm saline gargles and antiseptic mouthwash gargles. In case of repeated episodes of same problem removal of gum flap or Operculectomy will help.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
