What Causes Blood In Stools?

Last week I was in a car accident, and the air bag inflated and hit me in the chest pretty hard. I have bruises on my chest, but haven t had any medical attention. I just shook it off, and felt like the bruised feeling would eventually go away. My sternum feels pretty bruised, and it hurts if I cough or sneeze. But I don t have any trouble breathing or anything. I have noticed a lot of blood in my stool since then, though. Today I went and I thought I had started my period because there was just so much blood. It s bright red. I don t feel uncomfortable or have any pain in my rectal area, and I haven t been constipated. Should I be concerned?

General Surgeon 's  Response

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
In most cases, causes of bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, yiu can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
