What Causes Blood In Stool?

I have had blood in my stool or actually what looks like blood. A couple of days ago I ate beets and haven t eaten them in over 50+ years. I had a colonoscopy which was normal, only one diverticuli(sp) and was told to eat more fiber. No unusual stomach pain, come hemorrhoids. I am a 68 yr old female, overweight, but have lost 30lbs in the last six months by changing my eating habits. Lupus, Afib Heart disease, but all controlled my medication. Just wondering if discoloration is from the beets. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes... it (beets) is the likely reason
Occasionally, pigments and coloring from the food like Kool-Aid, Hawaiian Punch, red gelatin, and even beets, can turn your stool red.
Blood in stools might be due to GI bleed.
Colonic polyps, anal fissure, piles, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemic colitis, diverticulitis, cancer are the other possible causes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
