Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have started taking Meloxicam every day (7.5 mg) I have been taking it to help ease arthritis pain in my joints. I am also a prostate cancer patient who just completed a 60 day program of radiation therapy (ended 2 weeks ago.) I take a baby aspirin amlodopein and lysinopril and allergy medication each AM and Filoma at night for urination issues .....I have noticed light amounts of blood coming out with a regular bowel movement. Is it the medication or the result of side affects from the radiation or both?
Suggestive of gastrointestinal bleeding. Taking meloxicam while on aspirin can increase your risk of developing gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Based on the history you seem to have developed gastrointestinal bleeding apparently caused by taking meloxicam along with aspirin. You should consult your doctor immediately for further assessment and treatment. You may need a dose adjustment or an alternate effective drug for your joint pains.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. As a result, they are prone to cause ulcerations in the stomach. To minimize the effects of the same, I advise you to take an antacid like pantoprazole or ranitidine. On the other hand, radiation therapy could also result in some amount of ulceration in the rectum. I would advise you to undergo a colonoscopy and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to identify the source of the bleed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
