What Causes Blood In Stool After A Splenectomy?

Hi,i had splenectomy,spleno renal shunt and gastrojejonostomy at the same time around 2 weeks ago and everything is going fine but now i am having blood dropa in my stool and its very painful whenever i need to pass the stool...what should i do in this case?

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. . I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

I dont see how this can be related to your surgery since blood in stool is connected to intraluminal lesions inside the colon. SO this should not be surgical complication if you ask me.

In most cases, causes are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered.

Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss.
