What Causes Blood In Sputum While Coughing?

My 80 year old partner has coughed up a bit of blood. The first time was when he coughed & sneezed. The last time was not much. HE SAYS HE FEELS FINE BUT HOPES IT IS THE RESULT OF BLOOD THINNERS. tHE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS 2 WEEKS AGO As I m about to book an overseas holiday next May I can t help being concerned.

Hi Dear ,

As per your query your partner has blood in cough also known as hemoptysis. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like Bronchitis , Lung abscess, Lung cancer , Emphysema , Mitral valve stenosis and acid reflux can produce such symptoms . Well this condition need immediate medical attention and I would suggest you to consult chest specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order certain test like CT scan , chest X-ray , bronchoscopy , physical examination , biopsy and complete blood count . Doctor may prescribe Antibiotics for pneumonia or tuberculosis , Chemotherapy and/or radiation for lung cancer ,Steroids for inflammatory conditions or refer you to gastroenterologist if he find problem to be related with acid reflux .
