General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic

Prolonged immobilization, smoking, normal therapy etc in an elderly patient can trigger. a blood clot in deep veins of legs called Deep vein thrombosis/ DVT. The clot in leg breaks off and travel to the lungs called pulmonary embolism, resulting in breathing difficulties, cardiac arrhythmias and even sudden death.
Treatment is with medications that lyse the clot off and prevent further clot formation like heparin and warfarin.

Hope this answers your question
