What Causes Blood Clot In Lungs While On Metformin?

So my father is 49 and was put on metformin a few years ago... After being on the medication for a year maybe a little longer he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He is now in the hospital with a blood clot in his lungs... I am wondering if it is possible that the medication could be the cause of his recent medical problems...?
