What Causes Bleeding & Grayness On Nail After Being Stubbed?

I stubbed my toe really really hard the 2 nights ago. It bled around the sides, and the nailbed looked gray. Now it is looks gray, but kind of an opaque white on the top of the nail. I cleaned it off with hydrogen peroxide & kept a clean gauze wrap. Then I ve kept neosporin on it with gauze after I clean it since then, and I soaked it in epsom salt tonight. The toe looks read and swollen today, more now than yesterday or Friday night (when it happened). Should I go to the clinic? Does it sound like I have an infection to worry about or does it sound like part of the healing process? It isn t as painful as it was yesterday or the day before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is likely that you had some bleeding underneath the nail not just around the sides. The blood have no place to escape, and it is visible in the as the nail is translucent. The color grey will change to bluish-purple, or green-yellow over next couple of weeks as the bleed is cleared. It is nothing to worry about, as it will resolve on it's own.

Keep the toe clean, dry, and avoid wearing closed-toe footwear until the swelling subsides. The changing color is caused when the body resorbs the accumulated blood and is not unusual to experience post-injury. In addition, you may take pain medication like Panadol to get relief from pain and swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
