Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Thank you. I am concerned about my diabetic 73 year old husband who is also an alcoholic. We have just returned from holliday and whilst away he had a rest on the bed in his underpants. When he got up there was quite a lot of maroon blood on the bedcover. This is not the first time this has happened. usually it is at home. He has had colonoscopies and the most recent one was 6 months ago and it was fine. Sometimes iron tablets can have an effect I gather. I think he should see the doctor or at least perhaps wear something to protect leakages which can appear through his trousers. Could you please give me some advice?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows: 1. In alcoholics, portal vein hypertension can lead to varices and bleeding in the rectal region. 2. At this age, even mild bleeding is dangerous. Meet your doctor to get evaluated for varices in other locations as any internal bleeding can be sever and life threatening 3. Colonoscopy is not the present cause. However, repeat colonoscopy is essential to rule out any colonic carcinomas.
Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
