What Causes Black Stool With A Bloated Stomach In An Elderly Female?

My 87 year old mother is having black stool with a bloated stomach. Her back is in pain on the right side only. She often has bowel movement difficulty and uses Benefiber and laxatives. She had a CT Scan in October for the bloating and nothing was discovered. Should she be seen by her doctor?

Hello,

The black-colored stool indicates that there is bleeding inside the intestine somewhere. Normal ultra-sonogram cannot pick the bleeding, which happens inside the intestines. The best way is a colonoscopy. In this procedure, the scope inserted inside the intestine, and it helps to know where the bleeding comes from. I advise taking fiber-rich food intake and easily digestible food.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
