What Causes Black Stool Post Pepto-Bismol Intake?

I ve been sick since Saturday: diarrhea. I had a fever on Sunday that went away with Tylenol. I took imodium and pepto bismol over the weekend and stopped on Monday. I didn t go to the bathroom on Tuesday and Wednesday. Today I went 5 times and had black stools. Could it be a side effect of the pepto bismol?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Brief:

No this is not a side effect of Pepto bismol.

Description:

Since you had a fever, it was likely that diarrhea was of infective pathology and Pepto Bismol should not be taken in this case. But this is also true that taking pepto bismol will not lead to black stools. It is recommended that you consult a doctor and get hemoglobin tested. Also typhoid and peptic ulcer disease should be ruled out .

Hope this was helpful and do let me know if you have any further queries.

Get well soon.

Regards,
Dr. Akash Kumar
