What Causes Black Skin Around Toenail Removal Site?

I had an infected toenail removed on both sides of my big toe, the root was cauterized with the chemical phenol I believe. I have been soaking with Epson salts and applying an anti biotic ointment and covering with gauze and wrapping everyday, I am relatively pain free. Last night it was throbbing and burning and I have to remove the bandage, the weight hurt. The skin surrounding the nail where the Dr. cut is turning black, it appears to be the dead skin lifting away from the nail. I started cleaning with hydrogen peroxide in addition to the soaks and I am not seeing improvements in color, is this something I need to run back to the Dr. for or is this normal? Thank you
