What Causes Black Coloured Stools?

My 85 year old mother has not had an appetite for a couple of weeks and is eating very little. This morning she threw up and it was just dark liquid, looked like coffee. Then when she had a bowel movement it was very black. Should I wait till tomorrow and go to dr. or take her to the emerg. room? YYYY@YYYY

hello, it seems she is having the problem in her stomach. most probably peptic ulcers , those are small wounds/ erosions in stomach mucosa probably due to frequent gastritis.you hvnt mentioned about her past medical conditions.
if she is having oesophageal varices it also can produce similar picture. depending on her age malignancy is also a possibility. I haven't put it on the top of my list because you have mentioned a history of short period. any way she needs admission for assesing the amount of blood she lost. Also further investigation is needed to diagnosis and management of this patient. so she needs admission. hope this helps. thank you
