What Causes Bed Wetting After Alcohol Intake Despite Being On Effexor?

I have two daughters that take the anxiety drug Effexor (Venlaflaxine) and both seem to have issues wetting the bed if they drink alcohol. Is this a side effect of the medicine? It can happen if they drink as few as 3-4 beers in a night. Even if they stop drinking early and have not have any alcohol for 2-3 hours before going to bed. This does not happen with ANYONE else in my family so I feel it has got to have something to do with the medicine they may be on.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Effexor is Venlafaxine and the drug is a SNRI antidepressant drug. Excess alcohol intake in night increase the pressure on bladder and this results in loosening of bladder control. This can happen with Venlafaxine. To prevent this they have to stop taking alcohol in evening. Alcohol acts with sleep architecture and thus results in increase in REM sleep and thus increase the bed wetting. If problem persist then visit a doctor for help.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
