What Causes Back Pain And Swelling In Left Side Of The Groin?

My husband is 65. He has been having pain in his back left upper thigh and buttock. He has been sitting at a desk alot this week and he thought that was the cause. He is having tenderness in his left scrotum. Tonight we found an enlarged area in his groin on the left side. We are unsure whether to head to the ER or wait until tomorrow to see a doctor. When he lays down, the enlarged area sinks back in or goes away. We are thinking hernia maybe? He has never had anyrhing like this before. Martha

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Your symptoms are suggesting the possibility of hernia and there is possibility of strangulation also means cut off of blood supply that is leading to tenderness. It is an emergency only so you better take him immediately to a qualified surgeon who do physical examination and appropriate investigations to decide the type of surgery that is required.after surgery he should not lift weights and care should be taken that it will not occur again.
