What Causes Atopic Dermatitis In Young Adults?

My son, 19 years old, is diagnosed with sebborheic dermatitis. He had atopic dermatitis since 8 yrs old when we lived in the Philippines. It did not recur when we moved to New Zealand., but he developed sebborheic dermatitis and has dark pigmentation on cheeks as well. Is he immunocompromised? How come he keeps developing skin conditions? is this related to skin barrier failure? Aside from ketoconazole shampoo and pimafucort, what else can we use/do on a daily basis that will help minimise proliferation/spread to hairline and face?

hello, atopic dermatitis is due to skin barrier disruption, which has a genetic basis, usually starts in childhood and resolves as the child reaches adolescence.
But seborrheic dermatitis is not related to barrier disruption, usually seen after puberty when sebaceus glandular activity starts..As far as immunocompetency is concerned, only extensive lesions of seborrheic dermatitis have been found to be associated with an immunocompromised state, which can be known through blood investigations.
Yes, u need a topical steroid for the lesions and continue ketoconazole shampoo.. when the lesions of seb derm subside, then topical steroids can be tapered and stopped, but Ketoconazole shampoo will have to be continued , on a weekly basis.
Thank you
Take care
