What Causes Anal Bleeding?

Hello doc, I have never experience any infection or anything like this before. I woke this morning to discover that I have blood stains at the back of my underwear, where the anus is located. I changed underwear and some minutes later I still notice the blood stains on the current underwear am wearing. Although they are bright stains and some little drops, is it an indication that am suffering from something serious? Do I need to panic?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Are you male or female?

Painless blood discharge on underwear may be due to

1. Hemorrhoids.
2. Menstrual bleeding
3. Proctitis
4. Inflammatory bowel disease
5. Anal fissure or fistula with discharge etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Please consult your surgeon, he will do proctoscope and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
