What Causes An Ovarian Cyst?

Hello. I was told a few days ago that I had an ovarian cyst and that it was just a sack filled with fluid. But I had had an ultra sound a few days before hand and there was nothing there. I had a miscarriage about two weeks before this. Can cysts form in such a short amount of time and so short after being pregnant?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The main cause of ovarian cyst is hormonal imbalance like menstruation, pregnancy, endometriosis etc. Miscarriage also results in hormonal imbalance and may be a cause of ovarian cyst. Most of the cysts can be seen on ultra sound as well as these can also locate, if the cysts are filled with fluid or solid or mixed. However, sometimes, very small ovarian cysts may be missed on routine abdominal ultrasound. Transvaginal ultrasound should locate ovarian cysts more precisely. Also, most small cysts, particularly with fluid are harmless and these can come and go away by themselves of their own.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
