What Causes An Increased Appetite?

Hello, I have a 23yo AA son (former football athlete and body style) who is a new graduate and working in the Chicago area. Over the past two weeks he has experienced a sudden increase in appetite that is not satisfied. He is aware of his heightened appetite and is worried that something may be wrong. Have some thoughts but ask for your help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The causes for increased appetite are:
1. depression or anxiety
2. hyperthyroidism
3. diabeties
4. Graves' disease
5. glucagonoma etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. It may be physiological increase of appetite in severe exertion.

Please check your blood sugar, BMI, any infection, thyroid status or other hormonal status.

If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
