What Causes An Altered Sense Of Taste While On Levothyroxine?

I am 73 yrs old and I recently began taking ferrous sulfate tablets, 1 per day, 65 mg. in the mornings, because I am slightly anemic. I also take Levothroxine 75, mcg, 1 tablet per day in the morning. I have noticed that my food doesn t taste good now. I am wondering if this change could be connected to my taking the ferrous sulfate tablets.....or just to old age.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, the experience you're feeling is due to metallic taste of ferrous sulphate you're taking. It also may causes black stool and constipation. If you can't tolerate well anymore, you may try other ways of administration of iron (intravenonous or intramuscular injections), but that should be consulted carefully by doctor in office.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
