What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell?

So strange - about 6 months ago I began randomly smelling cigarette smoke. It happens a few times a day and recently has been waking me at night. I know no one is smoking around me - it recently happened on an airplane. Should I be concerned? Do I need to see a doctor?
