What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell?

Hi. I have a very strong smell and taste of petrol at the moment, everything smells the same and it s very concerning. My GP has prescribed steroid tablets. Is this right and can you provide reasons for this issue as my GP has never come across this before? Thank you

Phantosmia is the medical term for an imaginary odour. It is also known as an olfactory hallucination. There could be anumber of conditions which cause phantosmia. Nasal infection, sinus infection, nasal polyp, migrain, dental issues, smoking, neurological conditions like stroke, head injury etc. You could need expert investigation.
