What Causes An Altered Sense Of Smell When Suffering From Viral Infection?

Hello, I have a viral infection at the moment. Saturday my father cooked hot dogs. When I took a bite, it felt and tasted like the meat had been soaked in extremely potent rubbing alcohol for months. I smelled the meat and it stung my nose so bad I almost vomited. Since then I have randomly smelled extremely potent rubbing alcohol randomly here and there. I just recently tried to eat a jalepeno and had a similar experience with the hit dog. What is causing this?
