What Causes Ammonia Smelling Urine When Suffering From Kidney Disease?
Hello, I have third stage kidney disease. I saw my nephrologists just last week. Today my urine smells like very strong ammonia. Can you tell me why and what to do about it. I m 66 and can t get to the doctor or pharmacy until Thursday or Friday. Thanks Cindy Bain
Hello and welcome to HCM, Chronic kidney disease or end stage kidney disease is characterised by elevated levels of urea, uric acid and creatinine in blood. Urine shows presence of excessive amounts of proteins, lipids or red blood cells. Ammonia is not excreted in urine in kidney diseases. Thus, the peculiar odour is due to some other component and not due to ammonia. A urine examination - microscopic as well as chemical are required if not done before. Further management will be determined by the underlying cause of kidney disease. Thus, consult your nephrologist for further work up.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
