What Causes Aggressive Behaviour After Taking Depakote?

Kimberly has been on Depakote for at least 10 years. She is subject to epileptic seizures, but has not had one since 2012. Recently she wanted to become pregnant, so we weaned her off of Depakote. She had what must be nothing more than miny seizures, about three times. She decided, after this happened over a period of about three months that she was going to go back on the Depakote. I thought at first that it would be good for her to not take Depakote. She was immediately, once she was off it, more well balanced in her physical state of being, and far more balanced in her mental attitude toward our relationship. Our relationship is sexual but has declined because they inserted some kind of anti pregnancy thing in her arm. After three months we had that removed, but the symtoms didn t go away. The she went off Depakote. Her whole world view seemed to improve. Then she had a miniceisure, acting as if she had no clue what was going on. I brought her home, them sent her back to the Wellness Center because they have nurses on staff all the time. She was sent home later by a friend. All in all, she is back on the Depakote, but is shouting and angry too much of the time. Is this partly medical, or is it me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my clinical understanding, the issue here is flare up of underlying psychiatric disorder in terms of mood swings and agitation, rather than fault of Valproic Acid tablet per se.

She requires counselling and behavior therapy with an expert psychiatrist.

Thanks.
