What Causes Acute Exhaustion And Burning In The Esophagus?

Age 74 years (female)

Height 5 feet

Weight 55 kg

Hi

For the past couple of weeks, my mother has been suffering from the following symptoms

-     Acute exhaustion (she needs to lie down very often). Sometimes she doesn’t even have the strength to speak

-     Feeling of discomfort in the stomach/bloated belly

-     Frequent belching (this happens when she is sitting up – when she lies down this symptom disappears)

-     Burning in the oesophagus

-     Able to eat only small quantities of food. A long time is taken over every meal because of a feeling of fullness and bringing up of gas

-     Feeling of agitation/anxiety/panic (my mother is of a nervous disposition)

-     From her early thirties my mother has had a very delicate digestive system and for very many years used to take large quantities of Digene and Gelusil. Even now she does but less frequently.

-     She has borderline cholesterol

A gastroenterologist was consulted and he prescribed the following medicines

1.     Pan 40mg (pantoprazole)

2.     Cinesta

3.     Rablet 40 (rabeprazole)

4.     VSL 3 (probiotic)

5.     Ulyses 300 (Ursodesoxycholic Acid)

6.     Librium 10 (Chlordiazepoxide)

Do we need to do a test for helicobacter also? If so, which one? As my mother has been taking these medicines for the last 5 days, will they interfere with the results of the helicobacter test?

Thanks

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
hi,
based on the above symptoms you mentioned she can have cholelithiasis associated with gastritis.
did the doctor get an ultrasound scan of abdomen and pelvis?if so what is the report?
if she was my patient i would suggest an ultrasound abdomen&pelvis and other necessary blood workup..
see for a couple of days if she doent get better go for a scan..

if you have any more queries i would be happy to help you..

hi,
with the symptoms and the prescription i can conclude that she can have two problems..
1.severe gastritis..
2.cholecystitis..
for how many days did she take the meds..?i would advice her to undergo ultrasound scan of abdomen and pelvis..
if that is good.then nothing to worry
just use the above meds for 2-3 weeks..if the problem persists then a h.pylori test can be done..all these can be effectively treated with oral meds..along with that she has to follow healthy life style..
-quit smoking or alcohol(neglect if she doesnt take)
-bland diet(less of spices and salt)
-proper sleep
-plenty of water
-good dietary fiber
-avoid outside food
wish her a faster recovery..
if you have any further queries i would be happy to help you
