What Causes Acne In 40s?

Hi, I am a 48 year old pale complexioned man. I had clear skin in teens and twenties, but now have terrible acne problems in my 40s. I get black heads and deep swollen pimples, and even white scars that look like sub-terranian pimples, but just seem to be skin. I went to one dermatologist and she recommended a permanent low grade anti-biotic treatment, which I was not keen on, as there are "good" bacteria in my system, which I don't want to kill. However, I did try a 5% benzoil peroxide and anti-biotic cream, which helped, but I need to go back to her quarterly for refills, which is an expensive nuisance. Any thoughts?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have acne on face in 40's which occurs due to hormonal changes and whens skin pores becomes clogged and clogged pores of sebaceous gland filled with sebum ,dead skin and bacteria get infected. You are already taking benzoyl peroxide but not getting much benefited. I would suggest you to exfoliate your face once a week and apply aloe vera gel. You should apply azelaic acid containing cream twice a day. I would suggest you to drink 8-9 glasses of water daily and add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Oral retinoids are one of the most effective antiacne medicines which are recommended in case of severe or acne unresponsive to other medicines. If condition doesn't start getting better in a month then consult dermatologist Doctor may prescribe antibiotics course as you are not getting benefited with laser therapy. Cover skin with cloth when exposure to sun.
